There is good news for property owners of heritage buildings in Truro. A new Built Heritage Grant Program is being launched this spring by the Colchester Historical Society. The grant will assist owners of older properties to maintain or restore the heritage features of their buildings. The grant is for exterior work done on buildings within the municipality of Truro built before 1930. The buildings may be private homes, apartments, businesses or churches. Grants are made in individual amounts from $300 to $2000, not to exceed fifty percent of the total project cost.
The work must be completed in this calendar year, with applications due by 31 December 2011. More information and an application form are available at the Colchester Historical Society Museum, 29 Young Street and on our website. Some examples of eligible projects include exterior painting, conservation of wooden windows, restoration of carriage houses and fences, and removal of vinyl or aluminum siding.
Technical help, advice on project appropriateness and application assistance can be provided by heritage professionals. Property owners can contact the Colchester Historical Society for a referral for gratis advice from one of their partners in historic preservation.
The funding for this grant program comes from various civic and corporate sponsors and is administered through the Colchester Historical Society. Additional funds are raised through the Society’s heritage home tour, which will be held June 4 and 5.
